Oh how this record brings back memories... only the first few quick notes already trigger the reaction of recognition and sorrow. This is not a cheerful record, this is a record about life.
Although it might sound light at times, it is not for nothing that Barbara finally decides to sing her own songs after those of several others. Her voice has more tremble in it, more experience, more hardship than the previous album in my collection.
Once bought for 10 guilders, this 1964 (or 1968) recordings from Canada (Philips) is worth every dime, penny or guilder for that matter. It goes left to right from perky, to serious tough times, but at a reasonable pace. Who would be able to do such a thing on a record, at a distance from the listener? Well, Barbara has had considerable misfortune in her life, and she has found a way to channel all these emotions towards songs on one album. Wonderful...!
